Who is Kurt Schoop?

Kurt Schoop is an entrepreneur from Otrobanda, the old part of Willemstad across St. Anna Bay. He calls himself a yu di Korsou, born and raised on the island, and studied policy and organisation sciences. By 2019 he had been working on building up his neighbourhood for some twelve years, at first largely on his own and later with a team. He was chair of Fundashon Ser'i Otrobanda.

In August 2018, with Raygen Zuiverloon and Clayton Lasten, he organised the first Kaya Kaya, a street party in Ser'i Otrobanda. It was meant to be more than a party: bringing people together and moving the neighbourhood forward, with murals, cleaned-up lots and renovated houses. In 2019 it drew some 15,000 visitors, houses were renovated and pop-up exhibitions filled empty buildings. The fifth edition, in 2023, was preceded for the first time by an Art Week. Artist Francis Sling, also a guest on A Kross …, made the mural Djosa for Kaya Kaya 2024.

He sees murals as a way to make the neighbourhood more liveable and to bring people together. In June 2025, on behalf of the Kaya Kaya Foundation, he presented research on the festival's impact at the University of Curaçao. With Clayton Lasten he owns Bario Hotel in Otrobanda, where he also leads the walking tour Tour ku Kurt, about the history of Black culture on the island.
