Who is Samira Rafaela?
Samira Rafaela sat in the European Parliament for D66 (Renew Europe) from 2019 to 2024, in the final year as leader of the D66 delegation. In 2019 she became the first Dutch Member of the European Parliament with Afro-Caribbean roots; her mother is of Curaçao descent. In Brussels she was lead negotiator for the European rules against forced labour and for pay transparency, and she worked to involve the overseas countries and territories in European policy.
Before that she studied public administration and crisis and security management in Leiden and worked for the City of Amsterdam and the Dutch National Police, most recently as project lead for diversity and inclusion.
On 27 May 2026 her book Let's talk about our bodies. Het baarmoedertaboe doorbreken came out with Atlas Contact. It is about the silence around menstrual, hormonal and uterine complaints, from the first period to menopause, and builds on the manifesto of the same name she created in 2024 with Women Inc. and The European Institute of Women's Health. Women from Curaçao also contributed to the book, among them Shirma Rouse and Sharifa Janga. In August 2026 she signed it on Curaçao. That is what she talks about with Tania.
